Reykjavik: Iceland's role in World War Two - Private Day Trip
Explore the British and American occupation of Iceland on this guided tour.
Visit ruins, fjords, gun emplacements, and more as your guide explains how this isolated and beautiful country helped change the outcome of World War 2.
Start with a slow-paced walk around the center of Reykjavik, led by your in costume guide – an Entertainment Service Officer out here to entertain the troops – and you.
Using historical film and images, go back in time to understand why the Nazis were so obsessed with Iceland, why the British decided to invade, why the Americans followed, and what happened to Icelandic culture through the foreign influence.
Then drive to ruined fortifications before heading out to The War & Peace Museum, set on the banks of the stunning Hvalfjordur (Whale fjord), the most important harbor in the North Atlantic during WW2.
Afterwards, take in the incredible landscape as you view sites like the oldest still in use quonset hut (1942 American barracks), and the ruined bases of Hvammsvik and Hvitanes, before heading back to Reykjavik.
The walk around the city is mobility friendly, we do go up two hills ( but we can skip one if you'd rather) and there is just 1 unavoidable curb. There are seats along the way so we can take a little pause now and then. Some locations once we leave the city have no paved pathways, so good footwear is a must, and sadly this makes this tour difficult for wheelchair uses or people with limited mobility. However, we want to share this country and its history with everyone if we can. If you do not wish to go to the unpaved location just let me know. We can take the path close to it and talk about it from there. Unfortunately I do not have a wheel chair friendly minibus, however you know yourselves and your family and their abilities. If you are comfortable with your family and friends helping you in and out of the mini bus and your wheel chair is a foldable one then we are happy to customize your tour, please contact us and we can talk it through and see what we can do.
The age limit of 10 is recommended due to the serious subject matters we discuss (for example concentration camps). If you want to bring yours kids we are happy to alter the content of the tour a little but this isn't a "kid focused" tour.
Holocaust deniers are not welcome on the tour.
