Embark on one of Iceland's most sought-after tours, set against the backdrop of the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption of 2010. This dramatic event forever transformed the Icelandic landscape, as millions of liters of melted ice from Eyjafjallajokull surged down the mountainside, causing destructive floods on its journey to the Atlantic.

Our journey begins with a visit to the captivating Seljalandsfoss waterfall, one of Iceland's loveliest. Here, the adventurous can venture behind the thundering cascade, though caution is advised due to narrow and potentially slippery trails. In winter, the waterfall is artfully illuminated, allowing year-round enjoyment of its enchanting beauty.

Next, we explore a hidden canyon, adorned with lush green moss and unique flora, graced by a serene waterfall. Depending on conditions, we'll either stop at Gljúfrabúi or Nauthúsagil, both offering their own enchanting allure.

Get ready for some exhilarating action as we head to the Gigjökull glacier tongue. Our driver deflates the tires for a thrilling off-road experience, including splashing through glacier rivers. So, fasten your seatbelts, keep your windows closed, and let the adventure begin. Gigjökull is one of two glacier outlets from Eyjafjallajökull and was the focal point of the 2010 volcanic eruption.

Our final destination is Básar, nestled in Þórsmörk, one of the most breathtaking spots in Iceland. Here, you can embark on a short hike to explore the area's unique beauty. Þórsmörk is uniquely situated between three glaciers: Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindafjallajökull. This natural ring of glaciers and mountains creates a micro-climate that shields the valley from the harsh Icelandic highlands weather. The result is a diverse flora, a magnificent landscape, and ever-changing rushing torrents crisscrossing the valley floor—an absolute paradise for nature enthusiasts.

  • Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Seljalandsfoss is an iconic waterfall nestled in the heart of Iceland’s mesmerizing South Coast. What sets this natural wonder apart is the opportunity it offers adventurous visitors: a chance to walk behind the cascading veil of water. Fed by the Seljalandsá River and plummeting approximately 60 meters (197 feet) into a serene pool below, Seljalandsfoss presents a breathtaking spectacle year-round.

During the summer months, the surrounding lush greenery frames the waterfall, creating a picturesque scene. As you follow the well-maintained trail, you’ll approach a cavernous opening behind the falls, allowing you to experience the unique sensation of standing within the waterfall itself. It’s a mesmerizing encounter with the forces of nature.

In the winter, Seljalandsfoss takes on a magical allure as it often freezes into stunning ice formations, adding an ethereal quality to its already captivating beauty. Whether you visit in the warmth of summer or the crispness of winter, Seljalandsfoss promises an unforgettable experience and remains one of Iceland’s most photographed and cherished natural landmarks.

  • Gígjökull Glacier Tongue

Gígjökull is a captivating glacier outlet nestled in Iceland’s stunning Þórsmörk Valley. Known for its serene beauty and proximity to the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcano, Gígjökull offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness the dramatic effects of volcanic eruptions on glaciers. In 2010, Eyjafjallajökull erupted, causing the glacier to melt and carving a breathtaking ice canyon. This remarkable geological feature is a testament to the ever-changing landscapes of Iceland and serves as a reminder of the powerful forces that shape our planet. Gígjökull stands as a living testament to the dynamic and awe-inspiring nature of Iceland’s natural wonders.

  • Gljúfrabúi Waterfall

Gljúfrabúi, often referred to as the “Hidden Waterfall,” is a mystical and lesser-known gem tucked away in Iceland’s dramatic landscape. Located near the famous Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Gljúfrabúi cascades into a hidden gorge, partially concealed by towering cliffs and lush greenery. To access its enchanting beauty, you’ll need to wade through a shallow stream or don waterproof gear.

Once inside the cavern-like enclosure, you’ll be rewarded with the mesmerizing sight and sound of Gljúfrabúi’s elegant cascade as it plummets gracefully from above. The play of light and shadow within the hidden gorge creates a magical and ethereal atmosphere, making it a must-visit for those seeking a unique and off-the-beaten-path Icelandic adventure.

  • Please dress according to the weather in Iceland. Wear warm, comfortable clothing, a waterproof outer layer, sturdy hiking boots, gloves, and a wool/fleece hat.
