    Meeting with Your Guide

You will meet your guide for this Summer Glacier Hike at the Sólheimajökull Glacier parking lot. The official address for this location is Sólheimajökull, 871 Vík, or you can simply type in ‘Ice Pic Journeys’ on Google Maps to find us. This location is about a 2.5-hour drive from Reykjavík, so we recommend staying in a nearby accommodation the night before your tour.

Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled tour to check in and use the restrooms, as there are none at the glacier. Your guide will be waiting near the parking lot with a vehicle displaying the ‘Ice Pic Journeys’ logo.

    Drive to Sólheimajökull Glacier

Once everyone has checked in, we will embark on a short drive toward the Sólheimajökull Glacier. This journey will take about 5 minutes, during which your guide will share insights about the surrounding landscapes and the formation of this magnificent glacier.

    Glacier Hike

After arriving at the edge of the glacier, your guide will distribute the necessary gear for the hike. This includes crampons, an ice axe, a harness, a helmet, and hiking boots (if rented). Once geared up, you will begin your ascent onto Sólheimajökull Glacier, walking across its ever-changing ice formations.

The hike itself is moderate and suitable for most skill levels. As you make your way onto the ice, you will hear the satisfying crunch of your crampons and feel the raw power of nature beneath your feet. Your guide will lead you through crevasses, ice ridges, and dramatic formations shaped by centuries of natural forces. Along the way, they will explain how glaciers form, move, and shape the landscape around them.

    Exploring the Glacier’s Unique Features

Throughout the hike, you will witness breathtaking blue ice formations, deep crevasses, and moulins—vertical shafts carved into the glacier by meltwater. These otherworldly features change with the seasons, making each visit to the glacier a unique experience. Your guide will ensure plenty of time for photos and exploration as you take in the beauty of the ice.

    Return to the Parking Lot

After an unforgettable glacier adventure, you will hike back down to the glacier’s edge and remove your crampons before making the short drive back to the parking lot. Here, you will say farewell to your guide and leave with incredible memories of your Sólheimajökull Glacier Hike.
