Private 4x4 Jeep Tour to the Highlands: Thórsmörk
Thórsmörk
The trip to Thórsmörk (the valley of Thór) is a fun adventure as it requires crossing rivers with our modified 4×4 jeep and includes visiting a lush green ravine with waterfalls and a beautiful canyon as well as an impressive and unique looking glacier.
Thórsmörk is well known for it´s beautiful hiking trails, starting from birch forests in the lower valley and continuing up hundreds of meters to the surrounding mountains.
About the tour
When approaching the area of Thórsmörk, and entering to the mountain roads, our first visit will be to the Nauthúsagíl ravine where you will get your feet wet, but it is well worth it!
We will then continue towards an ash covered Gígjökull glacier, an outlet of Eyjafjallajökull.
Shortly before entering the valley of Thór, we will visit the enchanting Stakkholtsgjá canyon, which has a gravel walking path and is sure to spark your imagination to think about elves and trolls inhabiting the area.
Next we arrive to the hiking area, that offers multiple options depending on your wishes and fitness level. Some paths are easier and more flat, some are more challenging as they require ascending up and descending down the mountains. We strongly recommend the Valahnúkur hike, which is relatively short, albeit steep, and offers amazing 360° views across Thórsmörk. Your guide will listen to and adapt to your wishes regarding the hikes in the area.

This tour is fun and adventurous. The hikes will include e.g. wading in shallow water, and possibly hiking up a steep mountain. However there are a variety of hiking paths in the valley of Thórsmörk and you will decide what kind of hike you wish to do there. Depending on what type of hikes you wish to do, they are either moderate or challenging in difficulty level.
- Nauthúsagíl
Nauthúsagíl (Bull Shed Ravine) is said to get it´s name from an original bull shed that belonged to the nearby farm Stóru-Mörk.
This beautiful ravine is known especially for the rowan trees (Sorbus aucuparia) that are growing along the edges of the ravine as well as multiple waterfalls.
To access the last and most impressive waterfall, you will need to wade through a small river. Adventure guaranteed!
- Gígjökull
Gígjökull is a large outlet glacier of the famous Eyjafjallajökull under which a volcano erupted in 2010 that disrupted the air traffic all over Europe for weeks.
The volcanic ashes that cover this glacier makes it very unique looking glacier in Iceland.

Thórsmörk offers a variety of hiking options that can be chosen according to fitness level and time constraints of our visit in the area.
We absolutely recommend to hike on top of Valahnúkur, which offers the most spectacular views across the area.
Weather in Iceland can change rapidly and gets even harder to predict in the Highlands.
