Tröllaskagi (Troll Peninsula) is a spectacular natural beauty where the beauty of the mountains and the fjords is awe inspiring.

The area is rich with culture and for those knowledge thirsty history is on display at local folk museums and Cultural houses have exhibitions all year around.

We drive from Akureyri capital of the north out the fjord Eyjafjörður. The peninsula is cut by several deep valleys that were carved by glaciers during the glacial periods of the last Ice age and later by the rivers that now flow down those valleys. A few permanent glacier ice caps still exist in central Tröllaskagi but they are all rather small.

Along the way we see some of the fishing villages where the people have survived by fishing for centuries. We drive through Dalvík and Ólafsfjörður and we also stop by some black sand beach on the way to Siglufjörður that is a historic fishing town and also where the TV series ‘Trapped’ was filmed.

On the way back we stop in Hauganes. The village itself appears to have been formed in the late 19th century, first wooden house built in 1882, but centuries before that the area, the creek which forms a shelter from the ocean currents, was a harbour for the farmers in the area. The population is about 90 people and it’s been so for the past 50 years. Icelanders are famous for their use of hot geothermal water and in Hauganes you’ll find hot tubs on the black beach and a great opportunity for swimming in the Atlantic Ocean!

At the end of the tour we stop at Baccalá bar restaurant in Hauganes before we drive back to Akureyri.

This tour includes comfortable transportation in a minibus, a complimentary pickup service, and an English-speaking guide to enhance your experience. Additionally, entry to the Hering Museum is also included.

  • A 100% charge applies if canceled within 1 days of the start time.

Eyjafjörður is one of the longest fjords in Iceland. It is located in the central north of the country. Situated by the fjord is the country’s fourth most populous municipality, Akureyri.

  • Siglufjörður

Siglufjörður is a small, picturesque fishing town in North Iceland, nestled between towering mountains and the sea. It was once the center of Iceland’s herring industry, earning it the nickname “The Herring Capital of the World.” Today, it’s a charming destination known for its rich history, scenic beauty, and outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, and boating.

  • The Herring Era Museum in Siglufjörður

Three Historic Buildings – The museum is spread across three restored buildings, each offering a glimpse into different aspects of the herring era:

    • Róaldsbrakki (1916) – A former Norwegian salting station, now featuring exhibits on herring processing and the lives of the workers.
    • Grána (1907) – A fishmeal and oil factory displaying machinery used in herring production.
    • Boathouse – Showcasing beautifully restored herring boats and fishing gear.

Live Reenactments & Events – During the summer, the museum hosts lively performances where actors recreate scenes from the bustling herring industry.

Interactive Exhibits – Visitors can explore old fishing equipment, watch historical films, and even try their hand at salting herring.

The museum provides a fascinating insight into how Siglufjörður became the “Herring Capital of the World” and how the boom and bust of the industry shaped the town. It’s a must-visit for history lovers and those interested in Icelandic culture.

  • Hauganes Hot Tubes

The Hauganes Hot Tubs are a hidden gem in North Iceland, offering a relaxing geothermal bathing experience right by the sea. Located in the small fishing village of Hauganes, these hot tubs provide stunning views of Eyjafjörður fjord, making them a perfect stop for unwinding in nature.
