Þórsmörk (or Thorsmork) is a breathtaking mountain ridge tucked between Iceland’s glaciers—Tindfjallajökull to the north and Eyjafjallajökull to the south. Named after the Norse god Thor, this spot is a hiker’s dream, with lush valleys, dramatic cliffs, and rivers carving through volcanic landscapes.

We’ll wander trails that suit all skill levels, passing waterfalls, hot springs, and panoramic views of glaciers. The area’s unique microclimate (thanks to those towering peaks) creates pockets of vibrant greenery, like moss-covered slopes and birch forests, rare in Iceland’s often rugged terrain.

For adventure lovers, Þórsmörk offers everything from short hikes to challenging treks! Keep an eye out for Arctic foxes and seabirds, and don’t forget your camera—those glacial rivers and misty valleys are pure magic. Whether we’re camping under the midnight sun or just soaking in the views, Þórsmörk perfectly captures Iceland’s wild, untamed spirit.

  • An experienced, local hiking guide with extensive knowledge of the area
  • Transportation to and from the trailhead
  • Three days of hiking
  • Accommodations in a cozy mountain hut for the duration of the trip
  • All meals during the trip

You can expect daily hikes to last between 3 to 6 hours per day. While hiking in Þórsmörk, you will face many challenging sections including narrow ridges, steep moraines, drop-offs, rough terrain, and more.

The changes in elevation won’t be that significant, and the steeper sections of the trail will be well-marked and accessible, often via man-made steps.

Some special dietary requirements can be accommodated. The lack of space and facilities in the huts make it difficult for your guide to prepare numerous dishes daily. We can cater to vegetarians and those with food allergies.

Básar hut offers a dormitory-style accommodations for sleeping bags and are shared with fellow hikers, so be ready to spend the night with others.

In the Básar hut area, there's a small shop where hikers can purchase drinks and snacks. It's also the spot where they can buy their shower tickets.

  • From Reykjavík City to Hiking in Þórsmörk: Valahnúkur Adventure

Let’s start the day early! We’ll meet our guide at 6:45am at the BSI bus station in downtown Reykjavik and hop on the public highland bus to Þórsmörk. This beautiful valley is the end point of the famous Laugavegur trail, and we’re excited to explore it.

We’ll arrive at Básar, our cozy mountain hut, around 11:30am. After lunch, we’ll head out to hike Valahnúkur Mountain. The trail is pretty easy and offers amazing views of Þórsmörk and the surrounding areas. It’s a great way to get familiar with the landscape and spot other mountain huts and campsites.

After our hike, we’ll head down to Húsadalur and visit the famous Snorraríki cave in Langidalur. We’ll follow the well-marked trail back to Básar, just in time for dinner. Fun fact: Þórsmörk is named after the Norse god Thor, and it’s a haven for nature lovers and hikers alike!

    Elevation: 300 meters (980 feet)
    Distance: 7 km (4.3 miles)

This popular hike takes us around the stunning Tindfjöll mountains, offering breathtaking views that are totally worth the effort. Yes, there are some steeper sections and narrow paths, but the scenery is so amazing you’ll hardly notice!

As we hike, we’ll pass by unique rock formations like Tröllakirkja, or the “Troll Church,” which is as cool as it sounds. After a day of exploring, we’ll return to Básar for a well-deserved dinner.

    Elevation: 500 meters (1,640 feet)
    Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles)
    Duration: 5-6 hours

It’s a great way to experience the diverse terrain and gorgeous vibrant colors of the area!

Once we’ve finished our hike, we’ll board the highland bus at 3pm, saying goodbye to this stunning Icelandic paradise (until next time!)
