Vatnajökull Ice Cave Tour
Vatnajökull Ice Cave Tour
Immerse yourself within Iceland's largest glacier inside a natural ice cave! Experience blue ice and the remarkable volcanic and glacial environment of Vatnajökull National Park.
A challenging and wild adventure, the Vatnajökull Ice Cave tour will lead you deep into a remote glacier valley that is rarely visited by others. The 7.5Km hike is long and requires a good fitness ability level and for active and adventurous people it provides an exhilarating journey up to an impressive cave that lies right beneath the thick glacier ice. During the hike we have to use ropes for safety and the tour participants will be in situations which will include exposure to heights.
Incredible views will welcome you from the beginning of the hiking trail and all the way to the front of the glacier where you strap crampons onto your boots. Crampons are spikes that provide you with an amazing ability to walk on blue ice and they make it possible for you to explore the glacier landscapes and make your way down into the breathtaking ice cave where you will have more than enough time to take as many photos as you would like, admire the incredible blue colour of the ice and absorb the beauty of the ancient glacial ice that surrounds you.
Included in the journey to and from the ice cave you will experience the ever-changing glacier to explore features such as deep blue crevasses, towering ice seracs and panoramic view points. Whilst walking at a steady pace you will eventually complete a loop on the ice and then safely return to the parking lot. All necessary safety equipment is provided, including a helmet, harness and crampons.
Please be aware that the conditions of the glaciers and their ice caves are constantly changing as the ice moves and melts and therefore Glacier and Volcano Expeditions will make decision to guide this tour based on the conditions that exist on the day. When the conditions are unsuitable Glacier and Volcano Expeditions will look for a solution which will usually include offering a different type of tour or a refund.
