Strandir Adventure
Quiet isolation, well away from the tourist crowds, and magnificent scenery make the “Strandir” area in the Westfjords among the most attractive places to be found anywhere in the country. Price per vehicle. PRIVATE TOUR.
Immerse yourself in the serene isolation and breathtaking scenery of Strandir, one of the most captivating destinations in the country. In this untouched wilderness, you will discover a place where the true sounds of nature surround you—the soothing melodies of birdsong harmonizing with the rhythmic crashing of ocean waves and the cascading symphony of waterfalls and rivers.
Strandir holds a compelling and poignant history of witchcraft, witch-hunting, and sorcery, offering a tour into the mystical world of the supernatural. Our journey begins early as we depart from Reykjavik and make our way to the charming town of Hólmavík, the largest settlement in Strandir and the bustling hub of the county's commerce. Here, you will find the fascinating Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft, delving into the intriguing stories and practices of the past.
Continuing along the coastline of Steingrimsfjörður, we are often treated to the sight of majestic Humpback Whales playfully frolicking in the fjord—an awe-inspiring encounter with these magnificent creatures.
The Sorcerer's Cottage provides a glimpse into the lives of the locals during the 17th century, offering insight into why people turned to sorcery to seek solace in their challenging lives.
As we venture approximately 70 kilometers from Hólmavík, we reach the ethereal village of Djúpavík. Once a bustling hub during the prosperous "herring" age, this abandoned village now stands as a ghostlike testament to the past. The remnants of the desolate factory and the rusted remains of Ms. Suðurland transport you back in time, revealing the sheer remoteness of this captivating place.
Just north of Djúpavík, we have the privilege of visiting what can be argued as one of the world's most secluded man-made swimming pools, Krossneslaug. Nestled amidst the untamed landscape, this hidden gem offers a comfortably warm pool where you can unwind while beholding the roaring waves of the North Atlantic—a truly sensational experience that will leave an indelible mark on your memories.
