Ridge Top Hike
An adventure you can't miss out!
A wilderness adventure with incredible views
Towering cliffs, gigantic cascading glaciers, secret waterfalls and vast fields of fluffy green moss are only some of the highlights that you will encounter on our ridge-top hike. We start the day by walking through a birch forest right beside the foot of one of the major outlet glaciers in Skaftafell.
Dramatic views begin as soon as the trip starts where we visit a secret waterfall tucked away in a little canyon. After the waterfall we head up into a vast open green moss meadow that overlooks the largest glacial outwash plain in the world. Climbing steadily, after we cross the moss we will begin to climb a steep ridge which will involve using a rope for fall protection. Upon gaining the ridge we will be greeted with a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view (weather dependent) of the highest mountains in Iceland, enormous glaciers, the ocean and Skaftafell.
The most exhilarating part of the day is traversing the scenic ridge-top. We always make plenty of time for photo stops until we reach the rock arch where we usually have lunch. After lunch we continue our journey along and down off the ridge to complete the circuit.
This tour is highly recommended for fit adventure seekers and photographers. This is not an established or marked hiking trail, this is a pure Icelandic wilderness adventure!
Glacier safety equipment, Helmet, crampons, Ice axe/pole (if necessary)
All participants also need to be have the necessary equipment. It is very important that everyone arrives with enough warm clothing, gloves, a waterproof jacket and good sturdy hiking boots. Hiking boots need to provide ankle support so they need to be proper boots that cover your ankles, not just running shoes.
