Ocean Adventures Puffin tour
The Puffin is with out a doubt the most popular bird around Iceland. There is only a short sailing from Stykkishólmur to a great puffin area but the islands in Breiðafjörður are one of his main habitat over the summer time.
Join us on a scenic boat ride through Breiðafjörður Bay for a day of puffin spotting and stunning nature views.
Our tours take place on well-equipped Icelandic fishing boats, perfect for birdwatching and exploring the narrow waterways between the bay’s many small islands. Unlike larger vessels, our boats allow us to get closer to puffins and other seabirds without disturbing their natural habitat. We take pride in offering friendly, personal service to all of our guests.
The Puffin Tour departs from Stykkishólmur and sails to Elliðaey, one of the main puffin nesting sites in the area. During peak season (May to late August), the island is home to around 2,000 puffin pairs, and the surrounding isles are alive with birdlife. Other species often seen include kittiwakes, cormorants, arctic terns, white-tailed eagles, and many more.
Elliðaey is not only rich in birdlife—it also has a fascinating history. Once inhabited until 1950, the island still has its original house, barn, and lighthouse. The family who once lived there as lighthouse keepers continues to care for the island and its buildings to this day. Throughout the tour, you’ll learn more about the culture and stories of the islands in Breiðafjörður Bay.
This trip is ideal for photographers and nature lovers—you’ll have the chance to get close to the cliffs for incredible puffin shots and explore beautiful basalt columns surrounding the island. We’ll also visit a known seal-spotting area before heading back to Stykkishólmur. Along the way, you might spot dolphins or even majestic eagles soaring overhead.
