Hunting Film Locations
Norðurflug Helicopter Tours is excited to offer this new tour for 2020.
It is no secret that Iceland is home to some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. These natural beauties have played an
important role in major films and TV programs. Most of us have heard of ,,The Secret Life of Walter Mitty“, „Oblivion“, „Interstellar“, „Flags Of Our Fathers“, „Prometheus“, „Noah“, „Thor“ , „Star Wars“, „Game Of Thrones“ and many more.
On this tour we will give you the chance to go behind the scenes and overfly some of the beautiful landscapes captured in these film
projects we have participated in and tell you our stories behind the aerial shooting.
Let the hunting begin by following the Secret Life of Walter Mitty – flying from Reykjavik towards Hellisheiði plateau and Hengill
Geothermal Area. This active geothermal area is also known for some of the famous Game of Thrones scenes. You might for example remember the memorable fighting scene between Brienne of Tarth and the Hound! From there we overfly Þingvellir National
Park, where you will witness the continental drift of the Eurasian and the North American tectonic plates. If you keep a close eye you might witness the ,,Bloody Gate" from Game of Thrones from above!
Our journey continues, passing few of the hidden waterfalls on our way up to Jarlhettur, were we will make our first landing and enjoy the volcanic
views. Watch out for dragons, spaceships and aliens! After the stop we will get some aerial views of the famous Golden Circle sites; Geysir Geothermal Area and Gullfoss Waterfall before heading further inland towards the highlands of Iceland.
Flying with the dragons like John Snow at the Canyon Laxárgljúfur and passing to Dómadalur. There is a reason why Prometheus,
Oblivion and Noah all chose to film in the remote areas such as Dómadalur as it looks like you are on a different planet. When we arrive to Þórsmörk we will
make our second stop to check out the beautiful nature valley. We might not see the spaceship from Han Solo in Star Wars at Morinsheiði but it is a perfect
timing to take a selfie next to the helicopter. After the stop we will follow a trail of towering waterfalls as they drop out of the mountains to the black
sandy coastlines, as we make our way along the shore up to the lava fields of Reykjanes Peninsula to see some of the sites from „Flags of Our Fathers“ &
,,Noah". Fun fact: Did you know that the famous scene in Flags of our fathers, where the American flag is raised on a hill, is taken in
Iceland?!
Remember to have your camera along on this one!

The total duration of the tour is 3,5-4 hours, approx. 2 – 3 hour guided helicopter flight and two 15-20 minute landings on a scenic and unique areas.
We start and end our tours in Reykjavik Domestic Airport, just a few minute drive from the city centre. Our base is on the East side of Reykjavik Domestic Airport. Note that we are not where the local airline Air Iceland Connect is but on the other side behind hotel “Icelandair Reykjavik Natura.” The address is Nauthólsvegur 58d. It is a short 5 minutes drive from the City Center. The taxis usually know where we are located. Our GPS coordinates are: Latitude: 64.12941853 Longitude: -21.93335652. In the following link you can find a map of the location: https://goo.gl/maps/41rOp
We recommend that you wear good shoes, warm jacket, a hat and gloves. It does cold not get cold inside the helicopter (similar to sitting in a car) but it can get cold and windy on Icelandic mountain tops.
