Day 1: Wonderfull waterfalls trail.
After leaving Egilsstaðir we drive through Hallormsstaður forest and stop at the national park visitors center in Fljótsdalur. Driving 25 minutes we reach the starting point of Fossaleið trail, a beautiful hiking tour to our accommodation, Laugarfell highland hostel. On our way many waterfalls are to be seen, specially in the late part of summer. Our luggage will be transported and waiting our arrival in Laugarfell. The first night in Laugarfell we will enjoy a lovely welcome dinner, relax and prepare for the days ahead.

Day 2: Volcano.
On this day we visit the famous Askja volcano. After an early breakfast we leave Laugarfell highland hostel and head for Kárahnúkar dam before crossing Brúardalir on our way to the Askja area. After our lunchbreak in a mountain hut Dreki we take a short hike into the Drekagil canyon wich is a must see. Driving for 10-15 minutes and taking the 35 minute easy hike we finally reach Askja and the magnificent Víti crater. Swimming in the crater is highly recommended and an unforgettable experience. On our way back to Laugarfell we visit beautiful places. After dinner it´s nice to relax in the geothermal pools at the hostel.

Day 3:
On our final day in the highlands of the national park we visit the Hafrahvammar canyon. A fascinating hike along the canyon and for the main part of the season we will hike into it also. The possibility to follow the riverbed has only been open for a few years now since the dam was built. We´ll see all kinds of unbelievable rock formations throughout the canyon and if very lucky we get to see a falcon flying by. After the hike we stop at the natural warm shower in Laugavalladalur before heading back to Egilsstaðir were the tour ends.
