New Year’s Eve is a very special celebration in Iceland. It’s a magical evening where thousands of people attend community bonfires and catch up with friends and family. Lighting bonfires on New Year’s Eve is a long held Icelandic custom and make sure your there to witness the "blowing out the year" as the night sky lights up with fireworks of all different shapes and sizes. So make plans to spend New Year’s Eve in Reykjavik and experience Iceland’s spectacular celebration next to a bonfire while you soak in the New Year’s celebration.

For over 200 years it has been a custom to have community bonfires on New Year’s Eve in towns and villages around Iceland.
