Day 1:
We leave Egilsstaðir early in the morning, driving road 931 through Hallormsstaður, the country´s largest forest. Then we head for the highlands and take the F931 to Kárahnúkar dam and Hálslón reservoir. Continuing to Askja with a few interesting stops on our way we arrive at Drekagil canyon near Askja for a lunch stop. A short drive to Vikraborgir craters before the 2 km walk to Askja lake and Víti crater. Taking a bath in Víti crater is an unforgettable experience and highly recommended (optional). Driving for about 2 hrs. leads us to the magnificent Kverkfjöll were we stay for the night. A short evening hike to mt. Virkisfell next to the hut gives a great view over this magnificent scenery.

Day 2:
We start the day by going on a glacier hike (2-3 hrs) using crampons and explore the “ice world”. Shortly after lunch we leave Kverkfjöll and head for Hvannalindir, a beautiful oasis in the desert. Taking a different route back we make a refreshment stop on our way to Egilsstaðir.

Good shoes for light walking, warm clothes that suit the weather, waterproof clothes, sleeping bag, food & drinks.
