Itinerary Overview: 7-Day Guided Tour of Iceland

Day 1: Borgarfjörður and Húnaflói

  • Departure: Pick-up at 8:30 AM from your hotel in Reykjavík or up to 30 km from the capital.
  • Route: Borgarfjörður, Hrútafjörður, Húnaflói, Blönduós.

Highlights

  • Hvalfjörður Tunnel: Travel west through the scenic tunnel.
  • Deildartunguhver: The largest hot spring in Europe, with a flow rate of 180 liters per second at 97°C. Used to heat nearby towns like Borgarnes and Akranes.
  • Reykholtskirkja: A historic church built in 1885-1987. Reykholt is one of the most historical place in Iceland where you can learn about Snorri Sturluson, Iceland´s greatest Saga writer and an important person in Icelandic and Nordic cultural history.
  • Hraunfossar Waterfalls: Take a look at these at these stunning waterfalls set against a backdrop of ancient lava fields.
  • Langjökull Glacier: Enjoy scenic views of Europe’s second-largest glacier.
  • Grábrók Crater: Possible to take a short and relatively easy hike up to the volcanic crater where you have a view over the 2-3 thousand year old lava.
  • Kolugljúfur: Explore this beautiful canyon and waterfall.
  • Hvítserkur sea stack: The most iconic feature of Húnaflói, the bizarrely shaped rock formation.

Optional Activities: End the day at Forest lagoon with a warm bath surrounded by birch and pine trees and beautiful view over Eyjafjörður.

  • Accommodation: Check-in at your hotel near Blönduós around 6:00-7:00 PM. Enjoy dinner and relax for the evening.

Day 2: Blönduós to Mývatn

  • Departure: 9:00 AM from your hotel.
  • Route: Blönduós, Skagafjörður, Akureyri, Mývatn

Highlights:

  • Godafoss Waterfall: Visit this stunning waterfall.
  • Lake Mývatn: Explore this remarkable area and visit the Dimmuborgir lava fields.
  • Námafjall: Discover the geothermal area and the Leirhnjúkur and Viti craters.
  • Leirhnjúkur: Volcanic creater with colorful mud pools.

Optional Activities: Whale watching tours, jump aboard a ship and spot these amazing creatures or enjoy a geothermal bath at Jarðböðin in Mývatn.

Day 3: Mývatn to Egilsstaðir

  • Departure: 9:00 AM from your hotel.
  • Route: Húsavík, Ásbyrgi

  • Ásbyrgi Canyon: Explore the area and learn about the volcanic eruption and earthquakes that shaped Skjálftavatn Lake.
  • Húsavík: Visit this picturesque town known for its Viking-style whale watching harbor. Whale watching tours are available (additional booking required).

Day 4: Egilsstaðir to Djúpivogur

  • Departure: 9:00 AM from your hotel.
  • Route: Egilsstaðir, Fljótsdalur, Stöðvafjörður, Djúpivogur

Highlights:

  • Hengifoss waterfall: Second highest waterfall in Iceland, surrounded with basalt columns.
  • Skriðuklaustur: Cultural center in Fljótsdalshreppur.
  • Hallormsstaðaskógur: Possible to explore hiking trails in the area of Iceland's largest national forest,
  • Accommodation: Arrive in Djúpivogur around 6:00-7:00 PM.

Day 5: South East – Vestrahorn, Höfn, and Jökulsárlón

Highlights

  • Vestrahorn mountain: Popular photography spot in Iceland.
  • Jökulsárlón – Glacier Lagoon: Enjoy the glacial lagoon filled with icebergs.
  • Skaftafell: Discover this beautiful nature reserve with its impressive landscapes and beautiful hiking trails.

Optional Activities: Boat tours on Jökulsárlón are available from May-October for a closer look at the ice formations.

  • Accommodation: Arrive in Skaftafell area around 6:00-7:00 PM, followed by dinner and relaxation.

Day 6: South Coast – Vík, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss

Highlights

  • Reynisfjara: Black sand beach which features basalt columns and beautiful sea stacks.
  • Dyrhólahey: 
  • Skógafoss: Visit this iconic waterfall and enjoy their stunning view.
  • Seljalandsfoss: Walk behind this iconic waterfall.

Optional Activities: 3 hours Ice cave tour to start the day or Lava show in Vík.

  • Accommodation: Arrive at the hotel around 6:00-7:00 PM, with time for dinner and leisure.

Day 7: Golden Circle and Return to Reykjavík

  • Route: Hella, Flúðir and Laugarvatn

Highlights

  • Þingvellir National Park: Where the Icelandic Parliament, the world's oldest, was founded in 930 AD. Here, you'll witness the dramatic meeting point of the European and American tectonic plates and stand where Viking settlers once made their laws. Designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Geysir Geothermal Area:  Enjoy as the powerful Strokkur geyser erupts every few minutes, shooting boiling water high into the air.
  • Gullfoss Waterfall: Known as the "Queen of Icelandic Waterfalls," Gullfoss is a spectacular sight, cascading down into a deep canyon. This awe-inspiring waterfall is a highlight of the Golden Circle.

Optional Activities: If time permits, choose between a snowmobile tour on Langjökull, snorkel between continents in Silfra or a dip in the Secret Lagoon, a natural hot spring.

  • Accommodation: Arrive back to Reykjavík around 6:00-7:00 PM. Dinner and evening at leisure.

  • Guide: Local and English-speaking guide.
  • Duration: 7 days, approximately 9 hours per day, covering 300-400 km daily.
  • Lunch: There will be a stop around noon where you can purchase lunch.
  • Availability: Year-round.
