Fishing in the Lake Langisjór

Fishing licenses in Langisjór are sold from Hólaskjól Highland Center. The fishing right is valid for Langisjór lake and other lakes in mountains Fögrufjöll, total in 9 lakes. Fishing day costs 5.000 ISK per license. It is free for 15 years and younger. The fish in the lakes is char. The fishing license is valid 24 hours from arrival to the lake.

Most common is to fish at the peninsula where the cabin is placed and the south end of the lake. For fishers that are ready for hike the north side of the lake along with Breiðbak is normally good for fishing.

Good places are at the north end of the Lake. Getting there is at least one hour drive on a track that follows the mountain range Breiðbakur. A 4×4 car with good ground clearance is needed for that tour. All the Lakes in the mountains Fögrufjöll are also interesting but demanding as going there requires hiking.

Permission to angling in the Lake Langisjór. 

The permission is valid for arrival to the Lake for 24 hours

Lake Langisjór

Lake Langisjór is a large lake southwest of Vatnajökull. It is 27 square kilometers, 20 km long and 2 km wide where it is widest. The altitude is 662 meters above sea level. The Lake stretches southwest from the glacier. East of Langisjór is the mountain range Fögrufjöll, there are many rock formations that lead into the water and cross into the fjords and bays. On the West side of Langisjór is the Mountain Breiðbakur.

Sveinstindur

On the southern end is Sveinstindur which is named after Sveinn Pálsson, a physician and naturalist from Vík. Sveinstindur is 1092 m above sea level. It is relatively easy to walk up, so most people can get to the top with an increase of 400m. The view from the top is unique.

Fishing lodge / cabin

Cabin stands on a peninsula south by the Langisjór lake and is operated by Hólaskjól Highland Center. There is a sleeping bag accommodation for 4 in beds and 2 on double sofa bed. Included in the rent is a permit for fishing within the Langisjór lake.

A gas cooking facility is in the cabin. There is a WC in the Cabin.

Travelers that have rented the cabin are allowed to park cars there and put-up tents. Other travelers must put up their tents and park their cars at the service center the National Park got at the south end of lake Langisjór.

Vatnajökull national park / Campsite at Lake Langisjór

Lake Langisjór er protected. It is part of the Vatnajökull national park. At the south of the Lake the national park operates a service center. There is a facility for park rangers and WC facility as well as campsite, parking lot and place to put kayaks on the water. The park service center is almost the first thing travelers see when they approach Lake Langisjór in car. Travelers staying in tents must use this camp site. Camping elsewhere around the lake is prohibited. Without special permission.

Driving to the Lake Langisjór

To drive to Lake Langisjór travelers will drive on the mountain road F208. It is both possible to approach from Landmannalaugar or from the South Cost main road.

From road F208 approximately 3 km from Eldgjá we turn to F235. Road F235 normally opens at the end of June or beginning of July. It is possible to keep up with opening and status on mountain roads at the road administration web: http://www.vegagerdin.is/ferdaupplysingar/faerd-og-vedur/sudurland-faerd-kort/

Driving to Lake Langisjór requires 4×4 vehicle with good ground clearance. There are rivers to cross on the track.
