Follow Iceland’s South Coast through a landscape of falling water, towering cliffs, and black volcanic sand. Walk behind Seljalandsfoss when conditions allow, discover the tucked-away Gljúfrabúi waterfall, and take in the coastal views at Dyrhólaey and Reynisfjara.
Travel with a knowledgeable guide who shares the stories behind each stop, with time to explore, take photographs, and appreciate the scenery along the way.
Your Adventure Begins in Reykjavík
Your day starts with pickup from your accommodation or the closest designated bus stop in Reykjavík.
Settle in as you leave the city and head towards the South Coast. Your guide will introduce the places ahead as countryside views unfold outside your window.
Seljalandsfoss: A Different Perspective
Begin at Seljalandsfoss, where a slender cascade falls over a high cliff.
When the path is open and conditions allow, follow it behind the waterfall for a view through the falling water. Expect drifting spray and a memorable opportunity to experience the falls from another angle.
Gljúfrabúi: Hidden Among the Rocks
Nearby, discover Gljúfrabúi, a waterfall partly concealed by the cliffs around it.
Its tucked-away setting offers a different experience from the open views at Seljalandsfoss. Follow your guide’s advice as you explore and look towards the water falling within the rocky enclosure.
Skógafoss: Feel the Spray
Continue to Skógafoss, where a broad curtain of water tumbles over the cliff.
Approach the base to appreciate its power, keeping in mind that the spray can leave you wet. For another perspective, climb the stairs beside the waterfall and enjoy the views from above.
Whether you stay below or take on the steps, there is plenty to take in.
Dyrhólaey: Where Land Meets the Atlantic
At Dyrhólaey, turn your attention towards the coast and its distinctive rock formations.
Take in the sea views and the shapes of the surrounding cliffs as your guide introduces this dramatic stretch of shoreline. It is a chance to pause and appreciate the scale of the South Coast.
Reynisfjara: Black Sand and Basalt
Visit Reynisfjara, where black volcanic sand meets basalt cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean.
Explore the striking textures and formations while listening to your guide’s stories about the landscape. Follow all local safety instructions and keep well back from the water, as powerful waves can reach unexpectedly far up the beach.
