Þingvellir is the birthplace of the world’s longest continually-operated parliament, where many of Iceland’s most historically significant decisions were made. The Alþingi Assembly dates back to 930 AD. Þingvellir is a place of remarkable natural beauty, situated in the rift valley between the diverging North American and Eurasian tectonic plates (one of only two places on Earth where one can see such a phenomenon on dry land). For these reasons, Þingvellir was named Iceland’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
Strokkur, the most active geyser in the area, erupts every 5–8 minutes, with each eruption being slightly different. With patience, you will certainly have the opportunity to catch several eruptions. Here, you will also find ample souvenir shopping opportunities (or “Shopportunities”).
