A verdant oasis at the edge of the Langjökull glacier, beloved for its ancient turf farmstead, geothermal pool, and access to lava caves and glacier tours.

Húsafell is a small but historically rich settlement in Borgarfjörður in west Iceland, sitting at the foot of the Eiríksjökull and Langjökull glaciers. The estate has been continuously inhabited for centuries and its old turf farmhouse and stone chapel are among the best-preserved examples of traditional Icelandic rural architecture outside a museum.

The area is a popular base for adventure activities: the Langjökull glacier lies within easy reach for snowmobile trips and the Into the Glacier ice-tunnel tour, while Víðgelmir — one of Iceland’s largest known lava tubes — is only a short drive away. A geothermal swimming pool and several hiking trails into the surrounding lava fields add to the appeal for those spending a night or two.

Húsafell is roughly 120 km north-east of Reykjavík via the Borgarnes ring-road junction. Accommodation, a petrol station, and a small café are available on site. The area can be visited comfortably in summer; winter access is straightforward but some highland tracks to nearby sights require a 4WD.
