Exploring the Blue Lagoon

You probably have seen pictures of a hot big blue pool or people with white mud on their faces. The Blue Lagoon, as it is called, can definitely be the place that nobody misses when coming to Iceland. Let’s explain a little bit better what the Blue Lagoon is, and why it is worth going.

Imagine yourself floating on a 38 degrees huge pool under the cold air. Relaxing isn’t it?. Even if you visit it at day or night, it is incredible. If you can do both, we recommend you to do so.

A little bit of history

The Blue Lagoon was created by accident in Iceland lava fields, and it is considered a spin-off of the geothermal power plant in Svartsengi. The wastewater from the plant was supposed to disappear when making contact with the permeable lava field. However, that didn’t happen. The water didn’t penetrate the fields, so this way the lagoon began forming and the minerals dissolved creating the floor.

In the beginning, the Blue Lagoon was kind of primitive. One of the workers from the power station began bathing in the lagoon and started seeing good results in his skin, and also thought about it as a relaxing plan. The word got out, and many locals began visiting the place to take a bath and enjoy this natural beauty. Considering the number of people going, in 1992 the Blue Lagoon company was created. Dressing rooms and showers were installed so people could have a better experience without feeling uncomfortable with cold weather, or being naked in front of others.

Years later, the power plant moved, and so it was the ブルー ラグーン. The company decided to build new, bigger and fancier facilities, including the Silica Hotel and Lava Restaurant.

The Blue Lagoon Now: A Great Experience

This world wonder is located in Reykjanes, a region in the Southwest of Iceland, 40 min from Reykjavik city. Experiencing the Blue Lagoon is one of the must-dos if you are in Iceland, and you should not skip it. Now, the facilities are very impressive. Everything is modern and upgraded, giving the user the ultimate experience in a lovely place.

Feeling the hot water under a cold day is just fantastic. The use of the sauna and steam rooms is available for everyone, and with the Silica mud mask prepared in the Mask Bar, it is the perfect combination for a natural spa treatment.

If you are worried about what to do in the Blue Lagoon, know that this is a place to enjoy the natural marvel and relax at every level. Believe me; you will enjoy it with whomever you go with if it’s your partner, friends or kids, and even if you go alone.

Moreover, if you are wondering when is the best time to visit the Blue Lagoon, well, this is on you. We just went in winter time, and we decided to go after 18:00, this means it was fully dark. We loved it! It wasn’t as crowded as it can usually be, and we stayed until closing time. We had some few drinks and had a charming experience for the holiday closure.

If you are thinking about the photos, they are good at night too, but if you are looking for the Instagram picture, then perhaps its better if you go on broad daylight. Maybe try the summertime, and you can go whenever you want. (For the ones lost, summer in Iceland is full daylight for 20 to 22 hours a day. It starts in late May and gets normal at the beginning of August). As I said before, if you can do both, then make that happen!
