With 8100Km squared, Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in Europe, covering 8% of Iceland’s surface. The majestic glacier hides one of the most fearsome natural features underneath: volcanoes. During the last ice age, a lot of eruptions occurred under the glaciers, creating what it is known as subglacial eruptions. We don’t know when these can happen, or if they are ever going to happen again.
In 2008, the Vatnajökull National Park was established including the Vatnajökull ice cap and the national parks in Skaftafell and Jökulsárgljúfur.
