Witness the impact of glaciers on the landscape with this shore excursion from Djúpivogur

Departing from the quiet harbour town of Djúpivogur, this seven-hour shore excursion is crafted with cruise-ship guests in mind and takes you along Iceland’s striking southeast coast. You’ll travel southwards, following a route that reveals expansive sea views and the immense broad ice-cap of Vatnajökull looming on the horizon.

The first stop is the breathtaking Gletscherlagune Jökulsárlón — here enormous icebergs, calved from the glacier’s southern edge, drift serenely in the lagoon’s still waters before eventually making their way out to the sea. From there, the tour visits the nearby Diamantstrand (also known as Fellsfjara), a black-sand shoreline where glittering chunks of glacier ice wash up and create a surreal contrast of crystal ice against dark volcanic sand.

Finally, on the return, the journey stops at the scenic Hvalnes Peninsula with its lonely lighthouse and the dramatic horn-shaped peak of Eystrahorn mountain standing vigil.

Throughout the tour you’ll be guided by an experienced local guide, enjoy free WiFi on board, and be dropped back in time for your ship’s departure. Bring waterproof outer layers, warm accessories and comfortable shoes—and don’t forget to carry some snacks, as lunch isn’t provided

  • Gletscherlagune Jökulsárlón

Jokulsarlon was created by the Breiðarmerkurjökull glacial tongue, one of the outlet glaciers from Iceland’s largest ice cap Vatnajokull. In the 1970s, the retreating glacier left a huge pond near the coast that eventually became Iceland’s deepest lake. Another feature you will notice in the glacier lagoon is the floating icebergs, which glow in different shades of blue. Some of them even have brownish stripes, due to the ash sediment from volcanic eruptions decades ago.

After the iceberg calves off from the glacier, they roll, tumble, and drift around the lagoon, making them change colors, shapes, and appearances frequently. Over time, they break down into smaller pieces and are washed out to the sea. It’s absolutely breathtaking to watch.

Summer is a fantastic time to explore the lagoon as you may want to join a boat ride to sail among the icebergs, which is an optional extra. Seeing the floating icebergs close up is overwhelmingly unforgettable. Jokulsarlon also hosts vivid wildlife. Arctic terns nest close by, lovely seals swim around or rest on icebergs, and you get to experience the purest element of Iceland’s nature.

  • Diamantstrand

The icebergs that broke away from the glacier tongue wander into the lagoon before being washed ashore, scattered on the black sand beach like precious gems. The ice on the black sand is a stunning contrast. Truly a one-of-a-kind experience.

You may find some peacefulness walking in the fresh sea air, and maybe even some playfulness from the seals playing in the surf.

  • Hvalnes

This mountain is a dream for photographers. There are numerous locations with great angles on the dramatic peak. Near the Hvalnes lighthouse there are several excellent spots with an angle on Eystrahorn with the waves crashing on the rocks. The late afternoon is a favourite time of day because the colors are simply incredible.

As you get closer to the road, there are several small lakes with still waters that allow you to capture Eystrahorn reflected perfection for the most beautiful effect.
