Snorkeling Silfra, Caves & Northern lights
A tour combining snorkeling in Silfra in the morning, caving and obsverving the Northern lights in the evening.
This tour is only offered with pick up from Reykjavik and is in two parts, snorkeling in the morning and caving and learning about the Northern lights at night. You will have plenty of time in Reykjavik between pick ups to relax and eat dinner.
We will pick you up in Reykjavik and head to Silfra where your adventure begins with the snorkeling tour. Silfra, the famous fissure between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, provides an underwater experience unlike anywhere else on earth. Floating in the crystal clear glacial water will give you the sensation of flying as you pass through an expansive canyon created by the slow separation of the tectonic plates. You will be provided with a dry suit and an undergarment to keep you dry and warm while in the near-freezing water. We recommend that you wear thermal long-underwear and wool socks for additional warmth. The fissure is filled with crystal clear glacial water that has been filtered underground for decades. Make sure to drink some of the water while you are snorkeling, who knows when you will be able to drink water so pure again. This is an underwater scene unlike anywhere else on earth. After your 30-40 minute snorkeling session in Silfra, you can explore the Thingvellir area as you wish.
After the snorkeling tour we will drop you off in Reykjavik around 14.00 / 2PM and you can have a relaxing afternoon in Reykjavik before being picked up again at 20.00 / 8PM. The second part of this combo tour involves caving and learning about and observing the Northern lights at Aurora Basecamp.
The lava tube you will visit is called Leiðarendi cave. Leiðarendi displays the typical features of this most common type of lava cave in Iceland. It is full of utterly weird and wonderful rock formations as well as a splattering of amazing colors. Even though at some points inside the cave we will have to climb and crawl a little, this cave tour is an easy one that can be undertaken by everyone who feels comfortable in confined spaces and is fit to take a short hike. Please make sure to bring good shoes.
Aurora Basecamp is a Northern Lights Observatory where you will experience a unique indoor simulation of the Northern Lights in the Dark Park as well as learn about hunting them in the Icelandic sky. At Aurora Basecamp you will also get tips on how to spot them, how to take photos of them on your camera and much more. You can relax in front of the fire in the cozy lounge at Aurora Basecamp or buy a log and sit outside by the fire waiting and viewing the Northern lights.
If the forecast is not Northern lights friendly, you can still see them simulated in the awesome Dark Park installation. After a visit to Aurora Basecamp you will be fully prepared to hunt for them yourself in your rental car on subsequent nights should the forecast be more favorable.
The Silfra Snorkeling, Caving & Northern Lights Tour is a great combination tour for those who want to make the most of their time in Iceland. Please note that the caving and Northern lights tour is operated by our trusted sister company. They have years of experience and fantastic, knowledgeable guides .
Also known as aurora borealis, northern lights are caused by the effect of solar flares on earth's atmosphere. They appear in many forms and colors, ranging from green and white to pink and purple. Sometimes they appear as a dancing streak across the sky. At other times, they'll appear as lasers shooting down from outer space. As the possibility of viewing the northern lights depends on both solar activity and weather conditions here on earth, it is not possible to guarantee the northern lights. However, the simulation in the Dark Park at Aurora Basecamp allows you to see a simulation so real that you will not be disappointed if you are not able to catch the real lights.
We drop you off around midnight after a wonderful day of adventures in Iceland.
