Snowmobile and West Iceland
Where the adventure begins
Snowmobile tour on Iceland's second largest glacier Langjökull. Take in the astounding views and breathe in the fresh air.
This tour takes you to the second largest glacier in Iceland, Langjökull for an exhilarating 1-hour snowmobile ride. Take in the astounding views and breathe in the fresh air.
On the way to the glacier, we drive the beautiful Borgarfjörður with stops at the powerful hot spring Deildartunguhver and Hraunfossar and Barnafossar waterfalls.
Deildartunguhver has the highest water flow of any hot spring in Europe. Hraunfossar is about 900 metres wide and flows from underneath the nearby Hallmundarhraun lava field.
Barnafoss or Children waterfall got its name when two children fell into it and drown a couple of centuries ago. Two children decided to follow their family to church, even though they were asked to stay behind. To get to the church, they had to cross a natural stone bridge over the waterfall. While on the bridge, the children got dizzy and fell into the waterfall.
The distraught mother vowed that no one would ever be able to cross the bridge again without falling into the waterfall. Shortly afterwards the bridge collapsed.
Before heading onto the glacier for the snowmobile ride, we will stop in Húsafell for a lunch break.
Langjökull is about 953km2 in size and is up to 580 m (1900ft) thick. Water from the glacier flows in sub-surface streams all the way to Lake Þingvallavatn and Gullfoss waterfall, which is about 40 kilometres away.
