Paradise Valley - where natural beauty and important history meet
Þjórsárdalur valley (Paradise Valley) has a lot to offer – from spectacular nature to fascinating history and some unique hiking opportunities, if you're so inclined. Less than two hours away from Reykjavik it’s perfect for a day trip from the capital.
We drive out of Reykjavik on road number 1 to the east pass the town of Selfoss and then inland towards Þjórsárdalur valley. Named after Iceland's longest river Þjórsá the valley has a fascinating history and lots of spectacular nature. We will visit the beautiful waterfall of Hjálparfoss and the reconstructed viking farm Þjóðveldisbærinn where we'll learn about Iceland's viking past. The farm served as one of the sets for the famous TV-series Game of Thrones.
Next we visit the ruins of a farm from the 11th century before a short hike to the beautiful and serene oasis of Gjáin. We will learn of the impact of the second most active volcano Hekla on this beautiful valley. To top off the tour we drive to Iceland’s second highest waterfall of Háifoss and its little brother Granni. During the winter months it may not be possible to visit Haifoss but instead we offer you to take a dip in natural hot stream river in the valley…a truly unique experience. On the way back to Reykjavik City we visit the beautiful surroundings of Skálholt and the impressive church, steeped in history.
