The wonders of the Golden Circle with farm visits

We offer a Golden Circle Essentials tour, which brings you to the main highlights of the area. But this tour also includes some farm visits. Including one where we will stop for lunch.

On the dairy farm, we will enjoy the best ice cream in Iceland. And later on, we will have lunch on the tomato farm, (because, yes, we do grow tomatoes in Iceland)

Description of the tour

  • Pickup at your hotel will happen at a pre-agreed time
  • Half a day of visits to the most famous sites of Iceland.
  • Drop off at your hotel at the end of the day.

Visits of the day:

The National Park: Thingvellir

Your guide will walk you through the national park of Thingvellir. With a very rich history that started in the 10th century, and which is very important in the heart of any Icelander, Thingvellir also displays some spectacular natural features that can be seen nowhere else in the world.

Dairy farm visit

Run by the same family for almost 300 years, Efstidalur dairy farm was opened to tourism only a few years ago. It has now become one of the main highlights of the Golden Circle, and we seriously think that they offer the best ice cream in the country!

Geysir and Strokkur

The English word geyser originates from the Icelandic geyser named Geysir. So this is basically the geyser that named all the geysers in the world.

But, as it turns out, this original geyser no longer erupts and is considered dormant. However, nowadays there is another geyser next to it. That one is named Strokkur and it erupts every 5 to 10 minutes.

Gullfoss, the golden waterfall

Gullfoss is not a very high waterfall. Originating in the glacier of Langjökull, it is only 32m high, divided into two drops of respectively 11m and 21m.

But a waterfall does not need to be high to be beautiful, and a waterfall also does not need to be high to be powerful. And Gullfoss is definitely beautiful and extremely powerful.

Lunch in a Tomato Farm

Although the harsh Icelandic climate prevents us from growing almost anything outside, Mother Earth granted us a magic gift on this tiny island; Geothermia.

Thanks to this power, we can accomplish the miracle of growing tomatoes and other vegetables and fruits even in the dark cold months of winter in greenhouses.

In the tomato farm of Friðheimar, they are harvesting about 2 tons (kg) of tomatoes per day, all year long. And they have a beautiful restaurant inside the greenhouse, where we will have lunch.

  • Thingvellir National Park

Thingvellir is a site that presents both a historical and a natural interest.

    History

This is where the very first parliament of Europe was founded over 1000 years ago, in the year 930. In this place, Icelandic laws were debated and voted on until the 18th century.

    Nature

The tectonic fissure that runs through Iceland, and separates the North American plate from the Eurasian plate is visible here in Thingvellir. This is the only place in the world where the North Atlantic ridge is visible above sea level.

Our tour includes a walk to the impressive waterfall of Öxarárfoss.

  • Efstidalur Farm

We will visit the farm of Efstidalur. The business has been run by successive generations of the same family since 1750!

But it is only since 2013 that they are making their own dairy products, especially, what we consider to be the best ice cream in the whole country!

We will get a taste of it while observing the cows who did most of the hard work.

  • Geysir

In the area of Geysir, we can actually find two huge geysers:

The first one, called Geysir, is currently clogged and no longer erupts. It does not mean that it never will, but it is at the moment considered dormant.

This is the one after which all geysers in the world have been named. The word “geyser” therefore comes from Iceland.

The other big geyser is called Strokkur, and this one is not dormant at all!

You will see it erupting every 5-10 minutes, sometimes bursting water even up to 30 meters high.

  • Gullfoss

Gullfoss is an impressive waterfall, coming from a glacial river from the glacier of Langjökull.

The name Gullfoss translates to “Golden Waterfall”, some say that it is because of the color that the waterfall takes when the sun is setting, some say that it is related to the story of a grumpy farmer who threw his gold in the waterfall. Ask your guide about the story and what he thinks!

  • Friðheimar: Tomato farm and Restaurant

One would think that the dark and cold months of winter do not make Iceland the ideal place to grow tomatoes. But we do!

In the most famous tomato farm in the country: Friðheimar, your guide will tell you how the incredible nature of Iceland (together with modern technology) is actually making it possible.

This farm also has a restaurant, where we will have lunch. All their main dishes are tomato-based, their delicious bread is homemade, and the bloody mary is bloody good.

Having lunch at the farm requires booking in advance, and is therefore limited to their availability.

One would think that coming to Iceland in the winter or in the summer requires bringing completely different outfits.

This is both true and untrue. Let's say that it is very unlikely to be warm in winter and unlikely to be very cold in summer.

This said: Always, always be ready for rain and wind. The weather is highly unpredictable in Iceland and is famous for turning from one extreme to another in an instant.

What does it mean?

It means that no matter how many layers you are wearing in regards to the temperature, you should always have a windproof/rainproof jacket and pair of pants, either to wear or at least with you in your backpack.
